Choreographer James Batchelor’s workshop will explore some of the processes behind his latest creations. Since his involvement as a voyage artist on an expedition to sub-Antarctic Heard and McDonald Islands in 2016, James has been questioning how the body participates in spatial inquiry; how it senses, measures and maps the unknown.
Together with his collaborators he has been developing a process of experimental cartography, interrogating form, documentation and translation. With a focus on the body, it brings the exterior and interior space/s into conversation, igniting a curiosity about the unfathomably small bits of matter within. The body too is threaded with the unknown.
This workshop will serve as an introduction to some of these choreographic processes and give a deeper embodied insight to the new work HYPERSPACE.
*Suitable for emerging to mid-career artists with experience in dance or other movement based practices, including artists currently undertaking tertiary training.
