Karen Cheung
Cheung is an active promoter of contemporary dance in China. She worked at the Guangdong Modern Dance Company as Company Manager and Administrative Director from 2004 to 2011. She also worked as producer of the Guangdong Modern Dance Company Theatre and managed to turn the space into the most active home base for contemporary dance in the region. In 2011, she was appointed Director of the Guangdong Dance Festival. During her term until end of 2016, she has curated many exciting programs and brought the festival to a new level. In 2015, she started the Delta Moves project to promote contemporary dance of the Pearl River Delta region. In 2017, Cheung was appointed Head of China Dance Development of City Contemporary Dance Company (CCDC) in Hong Kong. She is also one of the key driving forces of HOTPOT – East Asia Dance Platform, which is a new festival network formed between Seoul International Dance Festival (Korea), Yokohama Dance Collection (Japan) and City Contemporary Dance Festival (China), in collaboration with ICEHOT – Nordic Dance Platform. HOTPOT aims to bring international attention to the Asian contemporary dance scene and to promote exchange and collaboration within and beyond the region. Cheung is the Program Director of the annual Beijing Dance Festival since 2012 and is now also the Program Director of the biennial City Contemporary Dance Festival, which had a successful debut in Hong Kong in November 2017.
