Annette Downs

Tasmania Performs/Performing Lines, Senior Producer Howrah, Australia

My accomplished career has seen me at the forefront of the performing arts in Tasmania for over 20 years. I am a well-respected leader, having played a principal role in companies such as Terrapin Puppet Theatre and Is Theatre Ltd. I am currently Senior Producer at Tasmania Performs, where I play a crucial role in the leadership, development and sustainability of the Tasmanian performing arts sector.

My professional and governance experience bridges the tertiary, private, government and creative sectors and I have consulted and advised to national, state and local governments. I am a natural collaborator and am adept at seeing synergies, creating connections between sectors and programs.

My experience and my empathetic, holistic approach lead me to uncover and develop stories and artists with unique viewpoints, telling stories that are vital, personal and contemporary. My mentoring skills are often called upon, and I am a passionate supporter of regional artists- breaking down barriers to enable access to industry and opportunities.

I am also an accomplished director and choreographer, having collaborated with La Boite, QTC, Blue Cow, Tas Theatre Co and Terrapin Puppet Theatre. I have directed numerous productions in Tasmania including Grounded, which won Best Director at the 2016 Tasmanian Theatre Awards.

I have been recognised throughout my career as a founder, pioneer and achiever; I am a Churchill Fellow, a Telstra Tasmanian Business Woman of the Year, a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and in 2017 was a Tasmanian Australian of the year finalist.

My experience is highly sought after for board appointments and I have provided advice and governance for the Tasmanian State Development Board, Australian National Playwrights Centre, Theatre Royal, Tasmanian Arts Advisory Board, the Federal Governments’ Playing Australia Committee, the Australia Council’s Theatre Board and the Salamanca Arts Centre.
